School Boundaries
School Districts
It is common for schools in close proximity to each other to amalgamate into school districts. Some school districts are for specific grade levels such as elementary and high schools. The term Unified School District is often applied when a school district comprises schools that operate across all levels of K-12 education. Each school district is defined by the schools it operates and the catchment area from which it draws students. Property owners are often obligated to enroll their children in the school district that corresponds to their property. They may or may not then have some discretion over which of the schools in the school district their children can attend.
Some school districts act as local government authorities and can impose taxes on residents. School districts have their own budgets and usually exercise discretion to share resources, including teachers to meet the changing needs of individual schools. The academic performance of school students within the district is often measured each year. For these reasons, home buyers and property investors may pay close attention to the school district(s) assigned to a property when making a decision.to purchase a property.
School districts usually remain static for a school year, but can change over time, especially when new schools are added to the district.

School Attendance Areas
The policies for public school attendance areas vary considerably. In some school districts, properties may be assigned to a single school for each grade of instruction. In other school districts, multiple schools may be assigned to the same area for the same grade giving property owners a choice as to which school they enroll. The grade levels covered by a specific school are not consistent across the country or even in the same school district.
The school attendance areas for a specific school are usually fixed for a school year, but it is not uncommon for these boundaries to change over
time, especially in areas in which the demographics are changing significantly.

US schools are usually grouped into school districts responsible for administering those schools. Some school districts may be responsible for all K12 schools in an area, while others may only administer schools of a specific level (e.g. high schools).
